With Me

PNW

I have lived in Washington State for 6 years now and I finally realized how much I love the Pacific Northwest. The timing was right as I needed a new phone case and decided to paint a trail I took a photo of a few years ago during a hike.

Now I can carry the PNW with me wherever I go!

Touch

This piece shows a part of my memories in the summer of 2016: The sunshine and heat all over my body standing in the fresh and blue ocean water of Mukilteo Beach in Washington.

I made extra effort in coloring the bubbles to display the ice cold temperature of the water.

A Walk

This is a self-portrait with bright sunlight shining on half of my face as I take a short walk on a windy day.

Fascinated by the absolute pitch-black pigment of charcoal sticks and pencils, I emphasized the contrast between the light and dark areas where the light touches and misses.

You

On this painting, a girl holds a bright yellow yard flower on a sunny day, bringing us sunshine and its warmth.

The opaque characteristic of the acrylic paints brings out the contrast between blue and yellow colors gleaming under the bright sunlight.

Delight

This is a painting of two Ethiopian boys reading a book written in English. Inspired by my sister’s Peace Corps experience in a town of Southern Ethiopia, one of them being organizing a successful book drive for her students, I created this painting to transmit the joy these youths experienced from encountering a new language. How can anyone not smile to see such delight in their faces? I hope for the audience to be evoked by the same feeling they felt.

tomorrow

Dawn

This is an acrylic painting of a person standing alone on the edge of a cliff, waiting for tomorrow's break of dawn.

Despite many struggles he has experienced, this person has not given up on anything yet.

The night is dark but the cliff he is standing on is as colorful as his potential to a brighter life.

The word 'dawn' used as a verb can mean 'become light' and I thought this was fitting to the painting.
